6   Green your own funeral in your will, while you can still make the decision

Think green in your will, so that you leave the smallest imprint when you pass away. In terms of space and cost, cremation seems to be the best options. There are now coffins made from recycled content, and reefs that are created from your remains, and sunk into the ocean. Eco-burials don't involve embalming, which uses chemicals like formaldehyde (that are absorbed by the soil and stick around for years), metal caskets, or concrete burial vaults.

Eco-Pod: coffins made from 100% recycled paper.

Recycle styrofoam - Image courtesy of http://www.treehugger.com/mountain-of-styrofoam-containers.jpg
Recycle styrofoam
If you can't avoid the styrofoam in the first place, the next best option is to find a place that will recycle it. Blue Earth Solutions has developed a process to recycle the styrofoam, so it can be reused. This prevents oil and plastic from being used to create new pellets, and prevents the foam from being sent to the landfill. Other problems with styrofoam is that it can breakdown into small pieces, get into our water streams, where marine wildlife will eat it as food. This can kill the fish, and it may ultimately end up back on our dinner plate.

The Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers (AFPR) provides a mail-back program (see link below). Check with your local recycler to see if they have other options. If you can't recycle it, see if there are ways to reuse it in your home.

"I actually started skipping the drying all together. The only risk is that you meet someone you know leaving the bathroom within the first 30 seconds, before your hands dry. And I wouldn't normally shake someone's hands when leaving the restroom. Put your hands in your pockets, or shake them dry, or wait a minute. Wet paper towels in the bathroom seem to be the biggest waste I can think of..."
