Drop off your shoes at your nearest Nike store (even if they're not their brand), and they'll give them to those in need, or recycle them for use on playgrounds and sports equipment. There are many other organizations that will take shoes that still have life in them, and give them to those in need. The bottom line is that you delay or prevent them from getting into the landfill.

Recycle styrofoam - Image courtesy of http://www.treehugger.com/mountain-of-styrofoam-containers.jpg
Recycle styrofoam
If you can't avoid the styrofoam in the first place, the next best option is to find a place that will recycle it. Blue Earth Solutions has developed a process to recycle the styrofoam, so it can be reused. This prevents oil and plastic from being used to create new pellets, and prevents the foam from being sent to the landfill. Other problems with styrofoam is that it can breakdown into small pieces, get into our water streams, where marine wildlife will eat it as food. This can kill the fish, and it may ultimately end up back on our dinner plate.

The Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers (AFPR) provides a mail-back program (see link below). Check with your local recycler to see if they have other options. If you can't recycle it, see if there are ways to reuse it in your home.

"I agree. If you are efficient with your home car washing, you can improve your water usage over a commercial facility. I think they are referring to the hose method of washing, not the better method of bucket and cloth. Similar to washing dishes. If you are paying attention, you can use less than a dishwasher. I think the studies are based upon average users, who may not be as economical as many of us."
